How to Prepare for the ACLS Course.

Preparation for this course is essential to optimize your learning and ensure a successful result. You will find various downloads or links to other sites. You are welcome to save them to your computer and or print them.

Please ensure that you have a HSFC BLS course within the last year and that this course is registered on the HSFC Resuscitation Portal website. The HSFC does not accept CPR courses from other agencies, ex Red Cross, St. John's Ambulance. Step 1)  Download, print, and study the ACLS Algorithms document. Bring it to the course as it contains the need to know information for the course.      ACLS Algorithms Download  

Step 2)  Obtain and read the new 2015 HSFC ACLS Provider Manual and the ACLS Cardiac Arrest, Tachycardia, and Bradycardia pocket card that comes with the manual. You may purchase the book on the resuscitation portal . In addition, please review the Skills Testing Checklist in the Appendix of the book starting on page 160. Your skills will be evaluated using these checklists.

Step 3)  If you do not have an account with the HSF Resuscitation Portal, then you must go the HSF website and create an account. This will give you access to the ACLS Precourse Assessment training materials. The email address that you provide to them must be the same as the one you provided when you registered online for our ACLS course. 

Step 4) Complete the HSF ACLS Precourse Assessment. Go to the HSFC website and find the assessment under the tab 'Training Resources'.  Complete the Precourse Self-test after viewing the 4 videos provided: BLS, Airway Management, Acute Coronary Syndrome, and Stroke.  You must obtain at least 74% on the precourse assessment, ideally you should aim for 90% score. You may go back and repeat the Self Assessment if required after  studying the manual.

*** Note that there will be a BLS testing station at the beginning of the course. You must complete a BLS course registered with the HSFC within one year of the ACLS course. Step 5) Be able to recognize the common ACLS core rhythms.  (sinus bradycardia/tachycardia, AV Heart Blocks, atrial fibrillation and flutter, AV node re-entrant tachycardia (AVnRT or SVT), ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation, asystole, pulseless electrical activity-PEA)
